A HUGE Thank You from the Former Precentor

June 23, 2015

Many thanks to all who were involved in planning the lovely celebration of my 50 years at St. John’s. The cakes at the reception were delicious. Thanks, too, to all who wrote such loving letters in my “Book of Memories.”

There were a few bumps in the road such as hospitalization at which time the powers that be were most kind. However, all being said, the 50 years were pleasant and rewarding thanks to staff members as well as many wonderful and caring parishioners.

While serving as organist/choir master and later as Precentor, I had the privilege of serving the Lord in the Sanctuary along with three Rectors and two Deans and their associates, including: the Rev. Tracy H Lamar, Jr., the Rev. Frank Cerveny, now Bishop, the Rev. Daniel P. Matthews, Dean James L. Sanders and Dean John C. Ross. What a wonderful history of leaders at St. John’s Church/Cathedral.

Many thanks to the congregation and choirs for accepting my knowledge and taste in music. I am enjoying providing organ music at several local churches; one such church is First Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge where Anna Thomas is choir director. At one time Anna directed the choir at the 9:00 am services at St. John’s. Would you believe the organ console at their church was bought from St. John’s years ago?

I will close with a Benediction I heard at the Church of the Ascension when their rector, Father Hess, retired last April:

Life is short, and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who travel the way with us.

So, be swift to love, and make haste to be kind.

Thanks be to God,

Ric Sidey
