St John’s 2016 Mission – Downtown YWCA Keys of Hope

February 1, 2017

We have had a very successful mission in 2016 with the YWCA Keys of Hope Program:

Dental Clinic – Pattie Thiele is leading this incredible mission.  It is a private dental clinic for the women.  Because of prior lack of dental care or other issues, there are serious needs for dental care and either partials or dentures.  Its hard to find a good job when you have teeth missing.  Pattie is very careful to save every tooth she can.  The clinic is held at the VMC Dental Clinic and supplies are paid by RAM.  Because it takes so long to get dentures and partials through the VMC, St John’s is purchasing the dentures or partials at a heavy discount through our volunteer dentist, Dr. Smita Barole.  Pattie is willing to continue leading this mission.

Vision Clinic – the Lions Vision Van came to St John’s Great Hall and provided complete vision exams and glasses when needed.  A thank you belongs to Norvell and Kathy Burrow.  Included in this mission were the women in the YW Domestic Abuse support group.  A special thanks to Kathy for dogging the follow up care for the women.

Stein Mart – Susan Hutsell is sorting through the Stein Mart items that are not saleable.  Various reasons – return without the packaging, etc.  (Good new stuff, just can't be put back on the retail shelf for different reasons)  Anyway Susan is sorting through these items for things for the YW women.  Bedspreads, curtains, warm socks, underwear, etc.  She worked with Stein Mart corporate to get a policy that she can deliver these items to the YW.  Susan has to get a check off of the items delivered.  It’s a corporate policy to make sure that non sellable items end up in good places.  We really have a gem here with Susan.

Parties – This is always a struggle on how to get the most women involved.  There’s also the issue of odd working hours and the women’s individual schedules.  We had a games party April 3, with gift certificates, and great Italian food, thanks to Terri.  It was great fun but we only had about 20 women attend.  We did get feedback that they would love to have a bingo game with potato salad bar.  Terri Korum has done an incredible job planning the meals and cooking.  Her focus is healthy eating.  She tries to include education as she leads the dinner.  She has wanted to teach healthy eating and cooking but its been hard to get a good time and enough interested women.

Daughters of the King – the daughters made Christmas gift bags for the women which included a personal note, personally made book mark.  Big thanks to Heather Stagg who made 58 book marks for them!  Also included was a gift certificate to either the movies or Publix.  All gift certificates are used now.

In giving or Food Pantry – we received food donations and cash for the YW food pantry.  In addition to pounds of food delivered by parishioners, St John’s received a total of $1,000 cash from the congregation during the service.  This has been a big item for the YW, keeping the emergency food pantry at the YW stocked with healthy food.  At the Friends' meeting, John Ross said that he would like to see out YW Food Drive become an annual event.  He will discuss this with Thom and Chris about making this a permanent annual even on our calendar.

Happy New Year a little late,

Karen
