Vinyasa Yoga with Bonnie, RYT-200

What: Vinyasa style yoga is a contemporary flow based yoga practice.  It incorporates the smooth way that the variety of poses run and flow together.  In vinyasa flow yoga, each movement is synchronized to a breath, connecting the breath with the body, mind and movement.  You should expect within the practice to breathe and honor yourself!  Everything else comes in time. These are the key elements to success with your yoga practice.  A general overall self-well-being is the goal to gain from the practice.  Yoga can simply provide a gentle gateway to move one’s body.  The flowing in and out of poses allows the body to have increased mobility.  Yoga is for all body types, being flexible is not a prerequisite.  Not all bodies are designed to go as deep into certain forms we attempt to get into.  Becoming aware of your body’s own unique abilities is part of the fun within the practice of yoga.  The movements within the yoga practice not only promote physical health, but can also have spiraling positive effects on individuals. It involves the toning, strengthening and stretching of the body’s muscles as well as the release of tension within the nervous system.  Greater strength within the muscles comes from the repetitions of the poses and the length of time holding these poses.  The same concept of repetitions can be true with the stretching poses.  Another benefit to holding poses and flowing with them throughout the yoga practice is that it builds endurance and burns calories.  For stretching, when the muscles and surrounding ligaments and tissues are lengthened and relaxed this creates more space and room for the flow of blood and fluids in-and-around these areas of the body being worked.  Results can lead to aiding the body’s functioning abilities, healing where needed and then also growth can occur.  Yoga brings awareness to all aspects of our bodies.  The benefits of stretching and moving within the yoga form help guide the body.  Results may vary but students have the opportunity of leaving with the feeling of being reenergized and refreshed.  Prior experience is not necessary to have.  I love teaching beginners!  Variations and modifications can be offered for all skill levels.  Like our slogan states here at St John's “There is room for you.”

When and Where:  We practice in the front room of the Administration Building every odd week of the month from 5:45 until 6:30 pm. Child care is provided. Donations are accepted. Bring your mat and come explore a variety of yoga poses!

Bonnie

It is my pleasure and honor to lead my students, holding the space for them to explore the practice of yoga.  Yoga is a journey, and I started mine 13 years ago.  I was inspired to teach by my fellow students in the classes I participated at the YMCA.  I have a love to teach and to meet my students where they are in their abilities.  I received my formal training in Asheville, North Carolina at the Asheville Yoga Center; also, I am a yoga alliance certified instructor.  Currently I am teaching lunch hour yoga for the staff at Summit Medical, Beaumont Magnet Academy, and the Health Department, as well as various private clients.  I have two little girls, Rose, age 11, and Zinnia, age 8.  You can see them any given Sunday in the treble choir or acolyting.  Aside from the joys of raising the girls and our flock of chickens, yoga is my spare time interest.  I study and practice as much for my own personal growth as I do for the guidance I offer to my students.

In Love,

Bonnie

Gentle Yoga & Meditation with Wayne, RYT-200

What: This gentle Kundalini class employs lots of movement but does not require precise alignment or advanced knowledge of yoga asanas.  Unlike vinyasa or Pilates, it’s not a physical workout in the usual sense.  The emphasis is on meditation, focusing on the breath to lead the movements and cultivating awareness of every sensation in the body.  We begin with gentle stretching of the spine and back, progressing through the legs and torso in a sequence expertly designed by HBK to awaken the innate energy we all possess. This practice aligns with Vedantan and Tantric traditions emphasizing integration and unity, experiencing the infinite in ourselves right here, right now in the very body we’re in. Some mantra is used, but it isn’t emphasized.  Class ends with about an eight-minute narrated relaxation in Shavasana (corpse pose). Donations are accepted.

When and Where:  We will practice in the front room of the Education & Administration Building at St. John’s every even week of the month from 5:45-6:45pm. Child care is provided.

Wayne

Wayne retired from UT after 32 years in communications. He discovered Yoga through Hari Bhajan Kaur (HBK), a certified Kundalini instructor, and student of Yogi Bhajan and a founding member of his ashram in Espanola, NM. She modified a very rigorous practice to accommodate injuries sustained while serving in the US Air Force. The result is a gentle Kundalini class almost anyone can do. When she moved to Florida, she entrusted Wayne with the continuation of her classes. Wayne has been teaching this class for the past twelve years and is currently teaching at Balanced You Studios on Bearden Hill. He and his wife, Heather, enjoy music and share their home with two remarkable cats. Wayne is an amateur bass player in an informal weekly jam with swing-era jazz musicians.
