St. Ann’s Mission Trip: A Blessing Times Four

August 5, 2015

St. John’s has taken a Youth Mission Trip to St. Ann’s in the Bronx every summer since 2005. As a rising high school freshman, parishioner Anna Rogers embarked on the first of her four adventures to St. Ann’s in 2012--something she saw as a sort of right-of-passage. Now a rising senior and among the oldest of the youth on the trip, Anna was blessed to participate thanks in part to the new Steven Norman Fund, a scholarship program offered by Steven’s family in his memory. Anna has grown up at St. John’s and has actively participated in child and youth events since she was five years old. Now she serves as an Acolyte and helps with the children’s program. This year’s trip was filled with cold, rainy days, a trip to the 9/11 our mission team would serve dinner to the children. In her first year, Anna said that the experience was not at all what she had expected. She arrived on day one to be greeted with a big hug by the happiest, most loving  little girl. Now four years later that same little girl is in 5th grade and it is her final year at St. Ann’s, just as it is Anna’s. When asked about her ‘take-away’ from the mission experience Anna said, “You have no idea what it’s like, what they’re like, until you experience it for yourself.”
