Daughters of The King Reconvenes Tuesday, September 1

All Women of St. John's are Invited Into the Order

With a refreshed emphasis on spiritual growth and community, St. John’s Order of the Daughters of the King, McGhee-Tyson Chapter, will begin their new year of monthly meetings on Tuesday, September 1, 10:30 am, in Room 7. After three years of faithful service as co-presidents, Linda Morris and Janet Lawson pass the baton off to Mercy Hankins and Heather Stagg (pictured left to right). Also new to this year’s DOK is the Rev. Canon Chris Hackett who will soon be installed as the group’s Chaplain. Heather was admitted to the Order in 2013. She had an interest in DOK even as a child, thanks to a dear friend and mentor many years her senior. In order to commit to prayer, service, and evangelism, the three-legged foundation of the Order, she would have to wait until retiring from nursing. Mercy has been in the Daughters since 2008, also upon retirement from nursing. For the past three years she has served as the President of the DOK in the Diocese of East Tennessee and traveled to Salt Lake City for the Triennial Meeting held in conjunction with National Convention. As an Order of the Episcopal Church, but also in communion with the Lutheran and Catholic Churches, service is a benchmark in DOK. In fact, our own Chapter prays daily over the St. John’s long-term prayer list, and they cater and serve at lovely receptions following Cathedral funerals. The DOK doesn’t fundraise, although some families make an offering for the receptions, and honorariums are received.

If you feel a call or desire to serve in your Church, particularly behind the scenes, Daughters may be a wonderful place for you, you need only be an active participant in the life of St. John’s. For more information, please reach out this year’s membership chair, Catherine Ambrose (Daughter since 2007), 865-584-6419, or either co-president (Mercy, 216-4342; Heather, 300-7224).
