On October 22, parishioner Georgiana Vines celebrated her birthday in an unusual way…she was honored with the Friends of Literacy-sponsored East Tennessee Writers’ Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement award. Congratulations to a reporter who helped blaze a trail for female reporters since graduating in 1961 from Florida State University. Her prolific career took her from covering the women’s department of the Miami Herald (serving as the only female reporter in the Metro department), to St. Petersburg, Florida, to a PR firm in Chicago, and finally in 1968 to the News Sentinel. Georgiana was elected years ago to the national board of directors of the Society of Professional Journalists, served as president, and now continues to serve as vice-chair of their diversity committee.
