Thank you to everyone who participated in the Cathedral Hymn Survey. The comments have been interesting, helpful, and enthusiastic about worship at St. John’s. We particularly appreciate the specificity of the comments in helping guide the choices of music. Our primary goal in every aspect of the music program is to elevate the worship experience for everyone in the room, and your input is crucial to this. The most common element in the comments relates to the “singability” of our music. This can come in the form of familiar music (“Amazing grace! how sweet the sound”) or in new music that is tuneful and easy to pick up. We also have a strong repertoire of music that is familiar to our congregation in particular (“The First Song of Isaiah”). Maintaining a strong base of singable hymns has been a priority throughout my tenure, and it seems that for most of our congregation, we would like to do even more of “the favorites.” We have sung Renewal tunes (“On Eagle’s Wings”) in the past couple of years, and we will be including more of these hymns more frequently in the future. As with any public forum, we had a wide diversity of responses. A few observed that the music is too difficult or esoteric. A few commented that it isn’t formal enough. Most responses, however, were generally favorable on the balance. While we cannot fulfill every request and desire, we will always do our best to please everyone. Your opinions and input are very important to all of us who collaborate on worship planning, and we will take all your feedback to heart. If you haven’t filled out a survey yet, please do so! Forms are available in the office or from Eunjin or myself. We are eager to hear from every person who worships at St. John’s. In closing, we will begin marking hymns in the bulletin that were chosen as favorites on the survey. Every time you see a hymn number marked with an asterisk (*), know that it was on at least one person’s list of most-meaningful hymns. And we will try to sing every favorite at least once in the coming year. Thank you again for your input. And just as importantly, thank you for your enthusiastic singing and participation in the worship at St. John’s. Our services are meaningful because of you!
